Richmond was in a black mood as he returned to his office after a quick trip home, followed by a chance encounter with a representative of the marine-expansion private investors group. He’d managed to fob the man off with an assurance that a new backer was on the point of signing, and he’d be in touch as soon as the ink was dry.

He could only feel thankful that it wasn’t one of the contractors he’d run into, someone whose carpentry or plumbing business had collapsed, or was on the verge of it, thanks to him. The physical threats some were making by email and text were terrifying enough; he didn’t have much doubt that at least one of them would be prepared to carry them out. It might not bring back their jobs, or their businesses, but beating him senseless would very likely afford them some degree of satisfaction.

Finding a message on his desk asking him to call Crispin Blake, the London-based lawyer acting for the company, he felt his head starting to throb. What now, for God’s sake?

Before picking up the phone he turned to check his emails. Nothing from Cooper, who was at the London office today. However, there was a message from one of the fraud investigators requesting a meeting the following week.

Presumably Crispin Blake wanted to discuss strategy ahead of the meeting, and he hoped to God Cooper was already prepared.

‘Fully,’ Cooper assured him, when Richmond finally got hold of him. ‘I swear, as far as Penn Financial is concerned, this will be nothing more than a bad memory by the end of next week.’

Richmond wanted to believe that, he really did, but while Cooper Jarrett’s delusions might work for some, they held little sway with Richmond.

Olivia was sitting in a purple vinyl banquette at the back of a noisy pizzeria, somewhere near Paradise Cove, an area just outside Kesterly, jammed with tourists, caravan parks, amusement arcades and fish and chip shops. It was Sasha’s choice, or more probably, Parker’s, so for the sake of an easier life she was doing her best to grin and bear it.

Richmond was going to hate it.

Spotting him at the door she waved to show him where she was, and watched him weave through the tables full of teenagers and raucous families to join her.

‘Why are we here?’ he asked, sliding into the seat next to her. He was clearly irritated to the point of anger at being made to suffer such an undesirable venue. Didn’t she realise he had more important things to do than come to a place like this on the whim of a sixteen-year-old daughter, he seemed to be saying. ‘And where’s Sasha?’ he barked.

‘In the loo. Parker’s on his way, apparently. I’ve ordered a glass of Pinot Grigio for you – it’s the best they could do. You look tired.’

‘I’m fine. So what’s this all about? Couldn’t we have gone somewhere else to cheer her up? What’s wrong with her, anyway?’

‘She had an upset with her friends today.
